The Mercedes c class w202.
The Mercedes c class face lift model from 1997 – 2000. This model came in several variants but we’re going to talk about the diesel version. The good the bad and the ugly.
Well shall we start with how all stories start, once upon a time Mercedes made a car in a far away land where they had something called an autobahn.
The C250 tds engine was a diesel powered multi valve 5 cylinder engine. This had 20 valves, a turbo and a intercooler. The engine produces 150 bhp as standard.
This version came in two models manual and auto. Both five speed.
The auto transmission came as a trip tronic box which also gave you a 5 speed manual so you can drive like a manual.
This auto box came had 2 modes winter and summer. The winter mode took gears over a longer period and at higher torque. This allowed an easier drive in winter
Standard functions as :
1. traction Control
2. Anti skid
3. Auto boot release
4. Standard body kit
5. Theft alarm from toeing
6. Total closure alarm system
7. Tinted windows
8. Ac
9. Sunroof
The list goes on.
The car does 0-60 in about 11 seconds and under.
The bad.
These cars tend not to have many issues apart from the following!
1. Air in fuel
2. Air in pipes
3. Glow plugs siezed
4. Fuel drain from fuel filter when car is parked for several hours.
Yep that’s about it so make sure you look after yours other wise the above are expensive to fix.
Now the ugly.
Rust
This is the most common problem, due to the fact that Mercedes never galvanised the steel. Even ford’s and pugs of that yr are better body wise.
Where there is a water ingress you will get rust.
This will be places like!
1. Bottom of doors
2. Wheel arches
3. Door edges at the top where window goes up
4. Boot lock
5. If you have had water going into the boot then you will have the rust there too.
6. Under the seats because the treatment black has worn away.
7. Solid members of the structure
When you start getting stars anywhere on bodywork that’s the best time to start treating the car.
Treatment.
This is better than the alternative which is new car as bodywork and panel replacement, by the time your finished may end up in the 100’s.
Look in eBay for body panels make sure you get the right one and shop around.
